Welcome to a bit of my world. I'm neither compulsive enough nor dedicated enough to write a blog, so this will have to do.

My name is Joe. I design sound for theatrical productions by vocation. I also teach.
One could divide my interests into these categories:

joe pino
  • sound design: my primary pursuit
  • maker: things I build which often involve inhaling lead fumes
  • listener: jangly pop to death metal and everything in between
  • recycler: the art of plundering / the plundering of art
  • ranter: occasionally I get the urge to shoot off my mouth (or fingers) about something
  • viewer: entertainment media--- print and film
  • jagoff: stupid stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else

What's New?

08 July 2010 - I'm extending the Creative Challenge until Aug 22. The 83 day challenge that would be. I've got a few bigger project ideas that will take more than one day to complete but I'm going to try and keep to the one project a day routine. I'm not sure how I'm going to post these projects - maybe a Flicker page.

01 July 2010 - The 30 Day Creative Challenge is complete. Check it out!

27 June 2010 - Overall, this may have been the most relaxing month I've had in a decade.

19 June 2010 - I've gassed on a few times in the last year about Another Version Of The Truth the fan-made Nine Inch Nails dvd. It arrived today and it is stunning. Stunning like "I don't have any other concert dvds this good" stunning. The first disc is audience footage from the Las Vegas show cut from 31 sources ranging from smartphone to consumer DVs. The second disc is hi-definition footage from three shows the band "leaked" to the fanbase. The third disc is audience footage from other concerts on the tour containing songs that aren't on the other two discs and internet content, like interviews. The audio from the LV show is audience capture from two sources, the second disc's audio is from the board mix (?) and disc three from the camera audio. Subtitled in eight languages. 5.1 mix on the second disc. Blue Ray or DVD format. All three discs were edited and mastered by fans via an online community effort. People donated time, money, blank media, technical skills, server space, design skills, etc. [I donated $ and burned discs.] The manufacture was a combination of low volume commercial reproduction (available for $6 donation) or community duplicated DVDr versions (available free). There is a companion download of the show where the band performed the entire Downward Spiral album start to end for what is likely the last (and perhaps only??) time. God I love the internet.

16 June 2010 - The whole 30 Day challenge is going so well I picked up Project 365 , which is basically an iPhone photo journal app. Take a photo a day and see your life in a whole new way to paraphrase the copy from the site. The next 14 days will be easy - I'll just use the photos from the MAKE project. Then we'll see how things go. But if I can keep up with it there should be an interesting biographic record at the end of the year.

14 June 2010 - Just posted last week's creative challenge projects - it's summer and I don't have an internet connection and I can't update my website from my phone :( , so it will get updated as I can manage.

13 June 2010 - I've a new appreciation for Ben Folds. I never gave him much of a listen although I have several of his albums. After seeing him judge on that acapella reality show I realized he was a pretty interesting guy and pretty knowledgeable. A couple weeks ago I stumbled onto his Twitter feed and started following him and he is in fact a really super interesting person. So this week I pulled out his albums for a new listen and I'm not sure why he didn't grab me before . There is such a strong influence from Todd Rundgren and Joe Jackson it seems like a given that I would like his music at first listen. Maybe I just got "Brick-ed" out when he first hit the scene. I guess some times it's just not the right time or place to really hear the music. Which makes me wonder what else I've dismissed or ignored that I should be listening to.

4 June 2010 - I spent yesterday sorting digital files for things to include in my promotion casebook. I ended up finding a bunch of audio to add to the sound design pages - not sure I found anything to use in my casebook though.

1 June 2010 - MAKE magazine put up a link to a site with a June challenge: one creative project per day for the entire month. Similar to the 24 hour comic (creating a finished comic book in 24 hours) or the guerilla sound challenge (3 hours to create a sound score from scratch using only a microphone and computer), this seems like a reasonable way to jumpstart the mind. I will attempt to make one creative thing per day for the next 30 days. I'll post them here.
