A Humument is a book, A Human Document by W.H. Mallock (1892) which Phillips bought for a few cents and over several years painted, colored, collaged over each page, obscuring words and revealing others. It's a cryptic but totally compelling work. The more you look at it the more it feels like it's making sense. The entire book is available online here . There is a copy of the first edition in the rare book room at the CMU library.
